Financial Support

16-19 Bursary Scheme – The Government provides a £180 million bursary scheme to help the most vulnerable 16-19 year-olds continue in full-time education and the money is distributed by colleges. The scheme is made up of two parts: the most vulnerable 16-19 year-olds will be given guaranteed bursaries of £1,200 a year and schools and colleges will also have the discretion to award bursaries to support any student who faces genuine financial barriers to participation such as costs of transport, food or equipment. Please click Sixth Form-Bursary Application Form for students and parents. Student Finance Information – Going to university or college is one of the biggest investments you can make. Do you know how much it is going to cost you and what help is available? The links below will help you find the information you need. Most students do not need to pay any tuition fees up-front, as these are covered by a Tuition Fee Loan. There are also maintenance grants and loans to help with living costs, such as rent, food, books, transport and entertainment. Further information can be found by clicking here.

Food & wellbeing

Along with our main canteen used by all students, the Sixth Form has its own food pod. Offering a slightly smaller selection of hot and cold foods from the canteen, the Sixth Form pod can be accessed from the start of the day till the end of lunch, giving our students more flexibility.

We offer several sports and musical activities for all years afterschool or during lunchbreak, along with revision/drop-in sessions specifically for Sixth Formers.

Pastoral provision at the Sixth Form is very strong and frequently receives praise from external visitors. We have a full-time non-teaching member of staff who is a trained counsellor providing wellbeing support for anything from a lost key or broken shoes to regular individual counselling sessions. Our Leader of 6th Form and Assistant Headteacher – 6th Form both keep a keen eye on Progress and support students with their academic development.

There are lots of opportunities for travel and trips. We have travelled to Iceland, New York, France and Belgium to visit the battlefields and Disneyland. Every year we ensure that all the students in the sixth form visit at least one city, last year this was Chester and Manchester. Our students also attend a UCAS fair and school careers fairs. Social events are organised by the student leaders independently of the school. modify for Idsall

Dress Code

All students should wear smart, modest work style wear. You set an example for other students in school, please remember that you are dressing for a school setting. If you are unsure whether your choice of clothes is suitable, please ask a member of the Sixth Form team before you wear it into school. The dress code can be found on our website: https://www.idsallschool.org/home/our-policies/uniform-and-equipment/

For clarification on any clothing, please speak to one of the Sixth Form team.

Your journey after Sixth Form

Careers support is part of the sixth form journey from Y11 transition right through to results day, prospective students are invited to meet with a senior member of staff along with a parent to discuss their courses to help make the right decisions about their sixth form courses. We have an on-site fully qualified careers advisor and students all have a Year 12 mock interview and take part in work experience. We take you to the best careers events, apprenticeship shows and UCAS fairs. Students are supported through the UCAS process by an expert team of tutors, and should it be needed, staff are always available right to the end on results day to support our students with clearing. Students have a tutor who they see as a group twice a day, once for tutor time and again for a session of reading in the afternoon, these sessions are an important part of sixth form life where you can develop wider skills and develop a reading portfolio, for pleasure or to support courses. modify for Idsall

All students and parents have access to independent advice and guidance (IAG), whenever required, to assist with making important academic or career decisions. A careers guidance interview is an impartial, one-to-one meeting between yourself and a professionally qualified Careers Adviser (Level 6 Diploma in Careers Guidance & Development). A guidance interview can last up to 45 minutes and is not like a job interview – there are no right or wrong answers, it’s all about you. modify for Idsall

Our Scholar’s programme is delivered by Sixth Form specialists and focuses on the very specific skills needed by students who aspire to study at the country’s top universities, Oxford and Cambridge or to follow a medicine, dentistry or veterinary pathway. These are very competitive programmes, and so will develop your interview confidence, support you to prepare for entrance exams and your Supra-curricular journal – your record of learning beyond your subject. The students on the scholars programme also work with our partners at Shrewsbury School who support the all-important interview preparation. modify for idsall
