Remembering Shifnal’s Fallen Heroes

As part of our journey through the memorials of Northern France, we've paid tribute to the brave soldiers from Shifnal who lost their lives in the First World War and have no known grave.

At the Canadian National Vimy Memorial, we honoured Private Basil Hutton L'Oste Brown and Private Lionel Cunningham L'Oste Brown, sons of Dr. Joseph L'Oste Brown of Victoria Road, Shifnal. After emigrating to Canada in 1906, both served with the 5th Battalion Canadian Infantry (Saskatchewan Regiment). They were tragically killed in the same attack on 28 April 1917 by German machine gun fire. Their names live on at Vimy, though their final resting places remain unknown.

At the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, we remembered more Shifnal sons:

Private Thomas Dainty, King’s Shropshire Light Infantry
Lance Corporal Harry Foreman, 11th Battalion Suffolk Regiment
Private Harold Rogers, Shropshire Yeomanry
Private Herbert Jones, 8th Battalion South Lancashire Regiment

Their sacrifice is inscribed among thousands of others who fought bravely and were never recovered.

At Beaumont-Hamel Memorial Park, we reflected at the moving tribute to the Newfoundland Regiment, symbolised by the Caribou crying out for her lost young, a powerful reminder of the deep cost of war.

Before heading home, we carry with us the memory of those who gave everything for future generations. 🌺

🌺 Idsall School Remembers – Tyne Cot Cemetery

We've continued our powerful journey with a visit to Tyne Cot Cemetery, the largest Commonwealth war cemetery in the world. 12,000 known graves, 8,000 graves of unknown soldiers and 34,952 names of soldiers with no known graves.

Standing among the endless rows of white headstones, our students took a moment to reflect at the Memorial Wall, where the names of fallen soldiers with Shropshire roots are engraved, a poignant reminder of the local lives lost in global conflict. Remembering King's Shropshire Light Infantry soldiers: Private John Cooper, Private John Head and Private Sidney Williams.

It was a moving experience that brought history close to home and underscored the importance of remembrance, respect, and learning from the past.

🪖 Idsall School WWI Battlefield Trip – Day 2: Hill 60

Today, our students visited the haunting site of Hill 60, one of the most fiercely contested positions on the Western Front.

📜 Captured by German forces in September 1914, Hill 60 saw devastating combat throughout the war. It was here, in April 1915, that British troops first faced the horrors of chlorine gas during the Second Battle of Ypres, a chilling moment in military history.

In June 1917, during the Third Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele), British and Australian tunnellers laid enormous mines beneath the German lines. When detonated, these mines killed over 10,000 German soldiers, finally securing Hill 60 for the Allies.

💣 The craters and scars of that conflict remain to this day, powerful reminders of the bravery and sacrifice shown in the face of unimaginable conditions.

Experiencing these sites first-hand deepens our understanding of history and honours those who fought so bravely.
